March 2018

March 18 -24, 2018. The Treehouse apartment is a birder’s paradise, with a screened porch overlooking a garden of pathways wandering through native plants and bird attractions. The large one-room plus private bath is nicely appointed and comfortably furnished with a feel for nature indoors. The larger screen porch extends the living quarters with sofas, chairs and a small table and chairs for meals. It also provides a perch to view White-crowned Pigeons, Painted Buntings, Monk Parakeet and endemic species such as the Bahama Woodstar. One evening around 9 PM we heard a Whip-poor-will calling as we sat discussing our day’s birding. Outdoor benches are placed near birdbaths, feeders, and a pond where one can sit and observe the Red-legged Thrush and Ovenbirds as they appear on the path looking for a hand out from Erika.

“Erika was the most wonderful host in every way. From the gorgeously presented room, to the superb breakfast on the sunny balcony and her wonderful garden, which is full of birds (and much other wildlife!). She was always very free with information about where to see the best birds and was even able to take us to some very good sites. As a busy lady she was not always able to do this, but provided us with excellent directions so that we could find them ourselves. We highly recommend staying with Erika, you will not be disappointed if you go”

"This B&B was far above our expectations. The "Treehouse" is a large apartment with two screened-in patios, beautifully furnished and decorated. The birding theme is evident everywhere you look, in original art and everyday items.Breakfast is fabulous and filling, consisting of a variety of healthy choices designed to last through the day! The host, Erika is gracious, friendly and one of the best tour and birding guides one can ask for. She also gave us information about hotspots on maps and took us everywhere we needed to go. She even includes pickup and drop off at the airport in her hospitality portfolio which is very convenient. To top it off, one can bird from the "Treehouse" veranda while having breakfast. Erika turned her backyard into a bird-friendly habitat which is also a hotspot on Ebird (check out Garden of the Gates), where we saw at least six different species of warblers in five minutes. Erika likes to keep her guests as well as her birds happy - every day at 4 pm she feeds mealworms to Ovenbirds and Red-legged Thrushes and her guests are invited to participate. All in all, can't say enough about what a good time we had! We will definitely return and recommend this B&B to our friends.

The "Treehouse" is a fantastic accommodation for birders. Its luxury, excellent view and access to a bird friendly garden were a real delight! On our first visit to Grand Bahama Island we saw more than 70 species in 2 1/2 days with many Bahama specialities and sub species among them, such as the Brownheaded Nuthatch, Zenaida Dove, Greater Antillean Bullfinch and La Sagra's Flycatcher. It was far beyond our expectations. Erika gave us excellent advice how to get the best experience of the bird richness of the island during our short stay. Grand Bahama is really birdorable!!!

Unique and stylish accommodation in a perfect location, next to a quiet, perfect beach

Erika and Ed are perfect hosts, meeting guests at the airport or ferry, and with a complete knowledge of the island to impart to visitors. The Tree House is stylish and very comfortable, combining air-conditioned space with two shaded spacious terraces overlooking the nature reserve. The perfect uncrowded beach is yards away at the bottom of the quiet residential road and the restaurants, bars and shops of the Lucayan Village are close by. The tree House mini kitchen is well equipped and suitable for occasional cooking. The modern high quality furnishings are complemented by wonderful original artwork. Eric and Ed have a friendly and efficient operation, including Ludi the housekeeper for the Tree House and the whole tour operator team who can organise tours and car rental. We have both spent many years in the hospitality industry and have traveled widely. We really recommend the Tree House for a couple seeking something unique. Finally, our two well behaved dogs traveled on the ferry from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport and were welcomed at the Tree House like VIP's! We stayed for a month and intend to return next year.

We had a large apartment with a nice living room plus kitchen, two double bed rooms, two bathrooms plus shower and a nice veranda for ourselves for a very fair rent. It is cleaned everyday and towels, soap and washing is supplied. You can prepare meals yourself or get at least breakfast. The beach is within walking distance (approx. 150 m) and has very few other people. There is a beach bar a few steps down the beach. You can have free bicycles to go shopping or dining at the Port Lucaya Marketplace, which is a ten minutes ride. Erika Gates is the perfect host, lived >40 yrs. on the island, is a well respected expert on local birds and speaks German as her mother's tongue (besides English of course). The visit of her habitat Garden of the Groves is complementary (in the morning its the best to go and maybe take your breakfast there). Also you can book one of her great outdoors activities (with a discount). Definitely some place to recommend.
